NHL Approves 15-Year Contract Between New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk

After several attempts and two long drama-filled months, the National Hockey League has finally approved a long-term contract, which was submitted to the NHL on August 27, between the New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk on Friday. The revised contract is for 15 years and is worth a total of $100 million. The NHL had previously rejected a contract between the Devils and 27-year-old Kovalchuk for 17 years and $102 million but there were issues about lowering the cap hit at the end of those previous attempted contracts - $8.9 million for 11 years then $750,000 for the 12th year and $500,000 for the final five years, which resulted in the cap hit lowering to about $6 million Continue Reading…

NFL Reduces Pittsburgh Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger Suspension to Four Games

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for the Pittsburgh Steelers was put on a six-game suspension by the NFL earlier this year due to the violation of the league’s policy regarding personal conduct. He was allegedly accused by a 20-year-old college student attending college in Georgia of sexual assault in March; however, he was never once arrested or charged with anything in relation to the alleged incident.

Commissioner of the NFL Roger Goodell placed the quarterback on a six-game suspension once the league started back. He could participate in pre-season games and practices but would be ineligible for regular season games until his suspension was up. Continue Reading…

New England Patriots Place CB Leigh Bodden on Injured Reserve

The New England Patriots have truly had a huge blow to their team. Tuesday, the Patriots had to place Leigh Bodden, their starting right cornerback, on injured reserve, which will end his NFL season – before it even starts and after just signing a few months ago a four-year contract worth $22 million.

Last season, he tied for the team-leading interceptions at five and is now being placed on the IR due to a struggling knee from early preseason but the more imminent factor is a torn rotator cuff. The entire move was sort of a surprise only due to the fact that he has been able to battle his knee injury throughout the preseason and was able to perform last week in the preseason game against the St. Louis Rams, which was his first preseason game. Continue Reading…

Aqib Talib of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Suspended by NFL for One Game

If it isn’t the substance abuse policy or the performance enhancing policy, it’s the personal conduct policy. We see plenty of all of three of these policies being violating by NFL players and it probably isn’t ever going to let up.

Once again, the NFL’s personal conduct policy has been violated and it has caused a one game suspension for 24-year-old Aqib Talib, cornerback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which was officially announced by the NFL on Tuesday. He was initially arrested last year due to a cab driver allegedly stating that the cornerback hit him (punched him). He was first charged with resisting arrest as well as simple battery. Talib, as a result, entered into a diversion program, which included classes for anger management. Continue Reading…

Minnesota Vikings’ Brett Favre Already Receiving Injections

As you probably know, Brett Favre re-joined the Minnesota Vikings just a couple weeks ago and at age 40, he was uncertain whether his weak and somewhat unstable left ankle would be able to stand up to this 2010 NFL season, which would be his 20th, for him to perform successfully throughout the entire football season.

Reports have now surfaced that the quarterback admitted to receiving injections in his left ankle. He received an injection Saturday following the preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. It was just several months ago, in May, that Favre had a third surgery on his ankle in order to remove particles. The shot is thus meant to help relieve pressure that he may be feeling in his ankle. Washington Nationals Ink RHP Livan Hernandez to One-Year Contract Extension

Not long after the Washington Nationals claimed a 4-2 win over the Cardinals on Sunday, the Washington Nationals announced that they signed RHP Livan Hernandez to a one-year contract extension that will be worth $1 million in addition to bonus incentives.

With Stephen Strasburg’s Major League debut not going exactly as expected from the beginning is now having to undergo surgery so the Nationals had to take a step forward and do something to help ensure a stable and strong team for next season.

The 35-year-old is currently 9-9 with an earned run average of 3.49 for his 27 starts this year. He rejoined the Washington Nationals August 25 of 2009 in which he has started 35 games and is 11-13 with an earned run average of 3.90. Continue Reading…

Antonio Bryant Released by Cincinnati Bengals

Simply put, Antonio Bryant was a shortcoming for the Cincinnati Bengals. They signed him in March as a free agent, despite his recent struggles with injuries and surgeries thinking that he had recovered enough to play well and be a huge contender for the team. However, shortly after signing him in March to a four-year contract worth $28 million, they realized they had probably made a move in the wrong direction.

The 29-year-old wide receiver suffered a knee injury, which is the same ailment he had in 2009 and surgery was performed in order to try to repair cartilage damage, which is also what has kept him from performing in any of the 2010 NFL pre-season games with the Bengals – which ultimately led to his dismissal from the team. Continue Reading…

Texas Rangers Place RHP Frank Francisco on DL

The Texas Rangers placed one of their relief pitchers on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday. Due to a strained rib cage, specifically the RHP’s right latissimus dorsi muscle, Frank Francisco was placed on the DL after undergoing an MRI exam, which determined that there was indeed inflammation in the area. For now, there is no specific timetable of when the RHP may return to the Rangers lineup.

The 30-year-old relief pitcher first aggarvated the area Friday in the Rangers 7-3 victory against the Oakland Athletics. He was only able to pitch to two batters before needing to leave the mound due to the discomfort that he was feeling. Continue Reading…

Season Ending Surgery a Possibility for Boston Red Sox Dustin Pedroia

The Boston Red Sox have had a pretty good season so far and are currently third in the standings for the American League East. However, injuries are not becoming for a team that has done well thus far this year and may actually have a chance at the number one position in the 2010 AL East Standings. You’d think as many key players that have already suffered major injuries this year, some keeping them out the rest of the season, that there couldn’t possibly be any more… Continue Reading…

Aubrayo Franklin to Sign with San Francisco 49ers Saturday

Sources report that the San Francisco 49ers and Aubrayo Franklin have come to terms on a contract and will fly out to take his physical and sign his tender, which will end a lengthy holdout. The tender is said to be worth just over $7 million for Franklin, who has not yet made his appearance at training camp.

Initially, both Franklin and the 49ers had hoped they could work out an agreement for a long-term contract; however, it appears that they were unable to decide on terms at this time that made both parties happy enough to settle on a long-term contract. Instead, Franklin will only have a one-year contract extension for now. Continue Reading…
