Is US giving away the internet?

23 September 2025

The Trump campaign Wednesday slammed President Barack Obama's move to give up USA oversight of domain names to worldwide supervision - siding with primary rival Ted Cruz in his effort to "preserving Internet freedom for the American people and citizens all over the world".

"Trump is committed to preserving Internet freedom for the American people and citizens all over the world", his campaign said.

If all goes as planned, on October 1 the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, which is part of the U.S. Commerce Department, will relinquish its role as the "steward" of several roles in Internet governance.

Contrary to what you might have heard from Senator Ted Cruz and other Republicans in Congress, the United States is not planning to "give away" the Internet to foreign governments.

"To be honest, though, watching Donald run a better campaign lately has been helpful to him", Roe said, adding that Cruz has also been encouraged by the case Trump has recently been making against Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

He continued: "The US created, developed and expanded the Internet across the globe".

"Congress needs to act, or Internet freedom will be lost for good, since there will be no way to make it great again once it is lost", Miller said.

There was a sour note for City when they had Spaniard Nolito sent off for a head-butt with four minutes remaining. Everton trailed against Middlesbrough following an own goal by keeper Maarten Stekelenburg before Barry levelled.

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, a former presidential primary foe of Trump's who has refused to endorse the real estate developer, has led a movement in congress to block the transition, arguing it could cede control of the internet itself to authoritarian regimes like Russian Federation and China and threaten online freedom. "It never has. In fact, the transition protects the Internet from authoritarian control".

Why the change? To finally remove all government control from global Internet governance.

President Obama "threw the Internet to the wolves, and they-Russia, China, Iran, and others-are ready to devour it", the GOP claims.

"Hillary Clinton, in her tech policy platform, says she supports the transition as a 'critical step towards safeguarding the Internet's openness for future generations, '" Politico noted about the plan to give over control of the web to an global consortium.

It seemed almost impossible after his primetime speech at the Republican National Convention in July, where he famously did not endorse the presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Like Cruz and other Republicans, Miller said internet freedoms could be jeopardized by the transfer, potentially opening the door for censorship by governments such as China and Russian Federation.

Previously, when talking about the spread of terrorism and the Internet's role in indoctrination, he said: "We're losing a lot of people because of the Internet". We urge Republicans to hold firm and stop the Internet giveaway by forcing the Obama administration to renew the vendor contract with ICANN for a two-year period. "The actual flow of traffic, and therefore speech, is up to individual network and platform operators".
