Japan earned a surprise win against favourites New Zealand in the men's rugby sevens clash at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro today.

Williams suffered a partial rupture of his Achilles tendon early in the second-half of New Zealand's 14-12 loss.

He will be replaced by Sione Molia while Joe Webber is the other New Zealand player who is also in doubt.

Sonny Bill Williams will play no further part at the Olympics for the New Zealand 7s team.

Britain's team had no such problems as they managed a comfortable 31-7 victory against a much-fancied Kenya side in their opening match on Tuesday.

Japan are ranked 10th out of the 12 teams taking part in Rio but thoroughly deserved their first ever win over the All Blacks, who are seeded third.

"I'm still shocked, to be honest", said Japan's New Zealand-born playmaker Lomano Lemeki.

But in a patchy performance, New Zealand bounced back with four unanswered tries after conceding the opener to Kenyan veteran Collins Injera.
