"We need unity. We have to win this election", Trump told a rally in Ryan's home state of Wisconsin, as he stressed that an inclusive, "big tent" Republican Party is the only way to defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton in November's general election.

In a move that highlighted Trump's vindictive reputation, Trump said Tuesday that he was "just not quite" ready to endorse Ryan, the nation's top elected Republican, in his congressional re-election.

Donald Trump faced an all-too-clear sign of GOP divisions Friday in two Midwestern battlegrounds, embraced by party leaders in one state but ignored in another as he strained to overcome deepening concerns about his presidential candidacy.

The second-term governor has responded subtly, posting messages on Twitter about "honor and respect" for Gold Star families and saying, "Republicans are lucky to have" House Speaker Paul Ryan, of Wisconsin, and Sens.

While defending former Fox News chief Roger Ailes (who has resigned in the midst of sexual assault allegations), Trump said that if his own daughter was sexually harassed at work he "would like to think she would find another career or find another company if that was the case".

"I'm not going to try and psychoanalyse this stuff", he said in a radio interview in WISN.

Trump's endorsement comes after a protracted battle between himself and Ryan, which began when the Speaker refused to endorse the GOP nominee in May. The hard week for Trump has overshadowed potentially damaging news for Democrats and his rival Hillary Clinton, such as recent revelations about how the United States delivered $400 million to Iran as part of a nuclear detente deal. He's a good man, and he's a good guy. On Friday, Priebus announced that he and his wife voted for Ryan.
