A Missouri man says his Tesla helped saved his life by driving him to the hospital during a life-threatening emergency.

He then took control of the vehicle again and managed to drive the few blocks to the hospital.

In late July, Springville lawyer Joshua Neally was driving home when he turned on the autopilot feature of his week-old Tesla X as he enters the highway.

Neally's story is unusual, but there is little question that autonomous driving technology is coming and that Tesla is leading the charge into the self-driving future.

Research groups at a handful of global institutions have come together to unmask some of the vulnerabilities of Tesla's Autopilot driver's assist technology.

While much of the press about Tesla has focused on the possible dangers of its beta feature 'Autopilot', this story has a rather different view of the feature.

The accident occurred when Tesla's self-driving feature failed to activate and was unable to distinguish an 18-wheel truck and trailer crossing the Florida highway against a bright sky.

Perhaps Mercedes could drop the flash and take a more infomercial approach to advertising its Drive Pilot system, much like how Tesla did with Autopilot on the Tesla Model S.

The world's first fatal Tesla Autopilot crash happened on May 7 in Williston in the United States.

"I just knew I had to get there, to the ER", Neally continued.

Neally, who now recovered from the incident and is currently receiving treatment, claims that the Model X's Autopilot may have saved his life, as it allowed him to continue moving toward the hospital instead of having to make a call and wait for an ambulance. 20 miles later, he was able to guide the vehicle off the highway at an exit ramp and into a nearby hospital where he checked himself into the emergency room.

The driver of the Tesla died in the crash. Autopilot isn't created to operate without any human interaction for 20+ minutes; what if the software had bugged out crashed into a divider, or into an oncoming vehicle? In a few years, when most cars have self-driving features, won't it be completely normal to have your auto drive you to the hospital?
