According to various media reports and announcements, Brad Brownell, current coach of Wright State, will be replacing Oliver Purnell as Clemson’s new basketball coach. Oliver Purnell, the former Tigers coach, is being replaced due to his leave from the team to go to DePaul to coach this last week. Brownell, a native of Indiana, was up for the job a couple years ago, but ended up being beat by Tom Crean.
He joined Wright State in the year 2006 and in the four seasons that Brownell was with the Raiders, he was 84-45 and has now agreed to move onto the Tigers for coaching. Prior to Wright State though, he successfully coached UNC-Wilmington Seahawks to two NCAA Tournaments in his four seasons there. This season with Wright State, he finished 22-11. As for the Tigers, they fell short in the first NCAA Tournament round.
However, some shocking news may be that Brownell wasn’t first choice for the new Tigers coach. Brownell was only offered the job after the initial choice, Rick Stansbury for Mississippi State Bulldogs, turned the job down.
A full official statement is to be announced on Tuesday.
