Every single year in the NCAA tournament, there is one team that seems to defy the odds and show the true meaning of March Madness. This season there have been a few teams that have surprised people throughout the 2011 NCAA tournament, but the one team above all that is really defined the word underdog and bracket buster is the VCU Rams (11).
As one of the eight teams that were in the First Four to start the 2011 NCAA Tournament, the VCU Rams (11) defeated the USC Trojans (59-46) and really didn’t surprise anyone as they were a no-name team that no one was looking at as a legitimate threat to go the distance in the 2011 NCAA tournament.
In the second round, the VCU Rams (11) dispatched the Georgetown Hoyas (74-56) in convincing fashion and started get some attention as this season’s bracket buster. It wasn’t until the third round when the Rams beat the Purdue Boilermakers (94-76) that people started to take notice of this team as a legitimate force to be reckoned with.
The two wins over these very good teams were only a sign of things to come for the VCU Rams (11) as they quickly became an unstoppable force in the Southwest Region. Ironically enough, the Rams did struggle in the Sweet 16 against the Florida State Seminoles as they came out with just a one point win, 72-71.
Once the VCU Rams (11) got past the Florida State Seminoles, they had arguably their toughest test have them against the number one seeded Kansas Jayhawks, but like every team before them the Jayhawks just couldn’t hang with this extremely hungry and motivated Rams squad that gave Kansas all they could handle.
Ultimately, the VCU Rams (11) were able to advance to the final four with a convincing 10 point victory over the Kansas Jayhawks, 71-61.
