The San Antonio Spurs have been arguably one of the most dominant teams in the Western Conference and the entire NBA for that matter for quite some time and their four NBA titles to prove just that, but any team with a lot of miles on them will start to break down at one time or another and that might be exactly what’s happened to Gregg Popovich’s dominant squad.
Despite being the seventh seed in the West heading into the NBA playoffs, the San Antonio Spurs played more like the second seed as they were able to knock out their Southwest division rivals in the Dallas Mavericks in the first round with relative ease.
With this surprising playoff series victory over the Mavs, the San Antonio Spurs looked like they might have one more NBA title run in them before this team starts to break up or be no longer able to contend with the likes of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Phoenix Suns.
Heading into the second round of the playoffs, the San Antonio Spurs faces familiar foe in the Phoenix Suns whom they have dominated in the past during the playoffs. Even though this second round series had the potential of going the full seven games, the complete opposite happen as Tim Duncan and company were swept in four games and Steve Nash was able to lead his team past the Spurs for the first time in his career.
Even though they played some inspired basketball in the first round of the playoffs and pulled off a big upset over the Dallas Mavericks, the Phoenix Suns really put them back in their place and showed why the San Antonio Spurs are still few players away from being able to contend once again.
One of the major moves the Gregg Popovich made during these playoffs was to start youngster George Hill over veteran point guard Tony Parker. At times this move seem to be genius as the Spurs excelled, but in the second round of the make any difference and now there are rumors of a possible trade in the works that would send Parker elsewhere.
Personally, I believe trading Tony Parker is exactly the right thing to do as he is one of the few players on the team that they could do without and get some good young talent in return via trade.
It is uncertain which teams Tony Parker might end up with or whether or not he will actually be traded, but with trade rumors starting this earlier I won’t be surprised to see him on another team next season.
