Bulls and McGrady Doubtful

Tracy McGrady, a highly recognized free agent this year that has grasped the headlines of all the major media resources, performed very well in his workout Monday with the Chicago Bulls. He has recovered well from surgery and is in very decent playing shape physically; however, it’s unlikely that the Bulls will sign him.

The Bulls are looking for someone that can play coming off of the bench. They are simply not looking for a starter at this time and that is exactly what McGrady is wanting – a starting position. If he cannot settle for the secondary role then the Bulls will likely not even consider signing the free agent.

The Bulls roster coming into training camp is pretty set and they are happy with where it currently stands and are simply not looking to change it at all. There is a league minimum of 13 contracts and the Bulls currently have 11 of those contracts set in stone.

The Chicago Bulls made it very clear what they were looking for in McGrady prior to him even coming for the workout and the meeting similar to that of an interview. McGrady has made a statement claiming that it is merely up to him to prove that he is a starter when he attends training camp and with this statement, the Bulls aren’t likely to sign him. The seven-time All-Star likely shut himself out of the deal all on its own with that single statement.

This is likely going to be a problem with McGrady finding a team to sign him. Most of the NBA teams have the strength of their roster set and aren’t looking to change it. They are simply looking for secondary roles – players that can play coming off the bench. If McGrady can’t find the willpower to play from the bench, it is going to be hard to find a team to sign him.

  1. jr says:

Mavs should sign McGrady. They can give him a limited starting role and play Caron Butler off the bench. Mavs need more depth at SG. McGrady can get 15-20 minutes a game and who cares if he starts. It’ll allow for Butler to use his aggresiveness later in the game.

Plus, the Mavs haven’t used their mid-level exception. So they could sign him to a 1 or 2 year deal worth 4-5.5 a year.

This would just give the Mavs more depth.
