Oakland Raiders: Gradkowski Out; Boller In

The Oakland Raiders had no choice yesterday but to sign veteran quarterback Kyle Boller. The day before the signing took place, Bruce Gradkowski, current quarterback for the Raiders, apparently tore a pectoral muscle during weightlifting workouts in the offseason, according to a close friend. However, the news conference where Tom Cable was speaking did not disclose any type of information regarding Gradkowski’s injury; he had a pre-draft talk with writers and reporters and left.

Apparently, the expected timeframe of dismissal from playing will be about a month, give or take a little time. According to a few media outlets, Gradkowski is scheduled to undergo surgery sometime today. He is expected to be healed and ready to go come time for training camp to begin. He is likely to battle with JaMarcus Russell during training camp for the starting position.

Boller weighs in at 208 pounds and is a little over 6-foot tall. He will be turning 29 this June and played for the St. Louis Rams last NFL season for seven games and the five seasons prior to the Rams, excluding the 2008 NFL season as he had no contract with any team and sat out the entire season, he played for the Baltimore Ravens, where after the five years his starting job was lost.

Be known, he is a former first round pick and having an arm as he does, he would make a great backup quarterback for the Raiders. He also has a history with Hue Jackson, the Raiders new offensive coordinator. Boller’s last season with the Ravens in 2008 was spent with Jackson, as he was the quarterbacks coach.

Nevertheless, one question remains a bit vague, up in the air. Since Gradkowski is competing with Russell for starting position when training camp commences, but Boller has been signed, will Boller get to compete for the starting position as well? Do you think he should be allowed to or should Boller remain as a backup? What are your thoughts?
