It was just earlier this month when the Seattle Seahawks and their top pick, Russell Okung, came to agreement on terms for a six-year contract after missing the initial eight days of the Seahawks training camp.
Chosen as the number 6 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft agreed to this contract worth over $29 million in guaranteed money with a maximum worth of nearly $60 million and was looking forward to taking the Seahawks as far as he could as a starter this year. Okung was named the starter for the Seahawks as soon as he was drafted since All-Pro Walter Jones was retiring.
However, plans have now changed as Okung has possibly suffered a high ankle sprain to his right ankle. An MRI exam is scheduled for today but no information has yet been released regarding the results of the MRI or the extent of the injury. If he does have a high ankle sprain, we are looking at at least two months, maybe longer, for Okung’s ankle to heal properly so that he can play again.
The injury was sustained Saturday during the game against the Green Bay Packers. Okung left the field during the first quarter of the game so everyone knew it wasn’t good at all.
While we don’t know the extent of the injury just yet, we can suspect that Okung will not appear on the field with the Seahawks as they head to Minnesota for their first preseason road game of the 2010 NFL season. Hopefully, we will see him in the first regular season game that is just a short three weeks away; however, if the MRI results show that it is indeed a high ankle sprain, we’ll likely miss him for the first six to eight games – or more depending on how quickly the left tackle can heal.
