The San Francisco 49ers will head into the 2010-2011 NFL regular season with high hopes of getting back to the playoffs for the first time since 2002 and they may have drastically improved their chances of doing just that after signing veteran running back Brian Westbrook to a one-year deal worth about $1.25 million in guaranteed money.
Coming into the NFL offseason, the seven-year veteran running back was a free agent for the first time in his career after playing for the Philadelphia Eagles alongside perennial Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb. Despite suffering multiple concussions last season that threatened to end his career, Westbrook has decided to comeback for at least one season with the San Francisco 49ers.
Over the summer the rumors were the Brian Westbrook would end up playing with his longtime teammate Donovan McNabb in Washington or possibly be headed to Denver after their backfield was ravaged with injuries, but that turned out not to be the case after backup running back Glen Coffee suddenly decided to retire and left the number two spot behind Frank Gore open in the San Francisco backfield.
Playing for the 49ers is the best possible option for Brian Westbrook as it gives him the best chance to win and best chance to get on the field as much as possible. There is no doubt that Frank Gore is the number one guy by the bay and will get a lot of carries this season, but to take the load off and mix things up this year, Westbrook will almost certainly play a pretty big role in this up and coming offense in Frisco. The Niners are -3 this week against the Vikings according to the latest online sportsbooks.
With Alex Smith quickly turning into the man under center for Mike Singletary and all things coming together for the 49ers, a NFC West division title could be right around the corner!
