Sources report that the San Francisco 49ers and Aubrayo Franklin have come to terms on a contract and will fly out to take his physical and sign his tender, which will end a lengthy holdout. The tender is said to be worth just over $7 million for Franklin, who has not yet made his appearance at training camp.
Initially, both Franklin and the 49ers had hoped they could work out an agreement for a long-term contract; however, it appears that they were unable to decide on terms at this time that made both parties happy enough to settle on a long-term contract. Instead, Franklin will only have a one-year contract extension for now.
Franklin is a great defensive tackle and all-around player. Had the 49ers not been able to ink him, he would have hit free agency and doubt that he would have lasted long. He would have been near the top of the list of free agents to be sought after. Franklin was initially drafted out of the 2005 draft during the fifth round by Baltimore and went to the 49ers prior the 2007 NFL season as a free agent.
Last season, 29-year-old Franklin recorded 36 tackles in addition to two sacks and a single interception, which helped him materialize into one of the best nose tackles. For his seven-year career, Franklin has recorded 291 tackles in addition to four sacks and a single interception. He also has three forced fumbles.
The 49ers have been looking great so far in terms of defense so with Franklin back, the defense will just improve. Now, although Franklin will sign his tender on Saturday and join the 49ers, it is doubtful that he’ll be able to play on the field with his team Saturday night in a pre-season game against the Oakland Raiders. The last pre-season game for the San Francisco 49ers is September 2 against the San Diego Chargers – this is the game that you can expect to see Franklin out on the field.
