The number 2 overall 2010 NFL Draft pick has finally agreed to terms with the Detroit Lions. The defensive tackle, Ndamukong Suh drafted out of Nebraska, has signed a contract with the Lions for five years and is worth a total of $69 million. $40 of the $69 million is guaranteed for Suh.
This contract agreement ends a holdout of four days and Suh was expected to join the Lions for Wednesday’s practice. Over the course of this four-day holdout, Suh missed a total of six team practices for the Lions’ training camp.
Now that Suh has signed with the Lions, there are only two first-round selections from the 2010 NFL Draft that have not agreed to terms with their teams and signed a contract. These two selections are Russell Okung, selected by the Seattle Seahawks for the number 6 overall draft pick, and C.J. Spiller, selected by the Buffalo Bills for the number 9 overall draft pick.
Suh was a finalist for the 2009 Heisman Trophy, at which time he finished fourth, and made history by being the first defensive tackle drafted within the top two selections of the draft since in 1997 when Oakland chose Darrell Russell as their draft pick. He was also the first defensive player that claimed the title of The Associated Press College Football Player of the Year since it was introduced in 1998.
The 6-foot-4 defensive tackle for the Detroit Lions also recorded 4 ½ sacks in the Big 12 title game against Texas and completed the entire season with a total of 12 sacks. During his career at Nebraska, Suh recorded 215 tackles in addition to 24 sacks, which allowed him to tie for fourth place in the school’s history. He also recorded 57 tackles for loss, which made him second in the school’s history falling only behind Grant Wistrom.
Suh definitely has some expectations to live up to join the Lions.
