Jimmy Clausen, former quarterback for Notre Dame, was seen throwing passes on pro day. This is the first time he has been back in front of NFL personnel since he had right foot surgery.
Friday, during a workout that lasted about 30 minutes, Clausen completed 57 of the attempted 59 passes. All of his short and midway throws seemed to be intact and accurate; however, he did seem to experience some minor issues with timing. The two passes that were missed were long ones that went to Robby Parris, former wide receiver. He attempted to catch one of the passes by diving to catch the ball, but didn’t succeed. Many of the passes were also overshot, which caused the receivers catching his passes to have to reach back a bit in order to successfully catch his pass.
During this workout, Clausen didn’t attempt any running, although he does feel that he is back well enough to play. He feels great and the workout on pro day didn’t affect him in a negative way. He also claimed that he wasn’t experiencing any pain with his right foot from his previous surgery. All of this may be because his footwork and speed seemed to be lacking a bit, which was definitely noticed by scouts.
The St. Louis Rams has the first pick, but the Coach didn’t make it clear whether Clausen was an interest or not. He said he looked healthy, but all the quarterbacks that he had seen thus far have had good passes.
Clausen’s complete workout was somewhat impressive – you could definitely see improvement - but will it be enough? As he partakes in more workouts across various league franchises, we will see. Hopefully, we will see more than average footwork, which could help him out slightly with the NFL scouts. However, it is apparent that when Donovan McNabb was traded it seems that it was a wise choice on the Washington Redskins’ part.
