Monday, the Bengals made an official announcement that they had signed free agent cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones and he will be returning to the NFL. The Bengals said that Jones will participate in Tuesday’s practice and will more than likely be willing to speak to media reporters after the practice. It was last Thursday, Adam Jones’ agent had first revealed the two-year deal between the Bengals and Jones.
This will be Jones’ first appearance back to the NFL since 2008. Jones was suspended for the entire 2007 NFL season then the Cowboys traded him. He was then suspended for six weeks into the 2008 NFL season and only playing a total of nine games in addition to not playing the entire season last year after the Cowboys released him from the team in February of 2009 due to a quarrel with a bodyguard. Since being a Tennessee first draft pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, he has been arrested several times and hasn’t been able to fully play since. This all after violating the conduct policy of the NFL.
Jones has participated in two different practice sessions with the Bengals during this offseason including last Tuesday’s practice. He will be going up against three other cornerbacks at Cincinnati so he will need to prove himself and stay out of trouble in order to try to make the starting team.
The Cincinnati Bengals is a team that has history on giving players second chances and this is exactly what they are doing for Jones – giving him a second chance at his NFL career. Hopefully, he won’t get into any trouble this year or next and will play his heart out and let the Bengals know that they did the right thing by giving him a second chance. Hopefully, Jones has learned from his mistakes.
