A woman in her 70s is the first MA resident to be diagnosed with West Nile virus in the state this year, the Department of Public Health announced.

The Iowa Department of Public Health says first thing you should do is avoid outdoor activity at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are active.

West Nile Virus has been a public health concern since 2002, when Canada's first human infection occurred. One source can be neglected swimming pools which can lead to West Nile Virus carrying mosquitoes.

A resident of Middlesex County in her 70s was diagnosed Tuesday by the Massachusetts State Public Health Laboratory, state health officials said.

Empty standing water, such as flower pots, buckets and barrels, where mosquitoes could breed.

In 2015, there were ten human cases of WNV infection identified in MA, said the announcement.

The majority of people (80%) who are infected with West Nile virus do not get sick.

Those who do become ill usually experience mild symptoms such as fever, headache and muscle aches, rash and fatigue (being tired).
