The site said Thursday that it was closing 14 years after Nick Denton, a veteran British journalist, founded it in NY and two days after Univision won a bankruptcy auction for its parent company, Gawker Media.
The blog's parent, Gawker Media, was sold following a $140 million judgment against it in an invasion-of-privacy lawsuit filed by former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan over a sex tape. The tech publisher Ziff Davis, which made a $90 million stalking-horse offer for Gawker Media in June-the only other bidder on Tuesday-had also indicated it was only interested in the company's other properties.
Gawker is appealing the Hogan ruling.
"After almost fourteen years of operation, Gawker.com will be shutting down next week", wrote J.K. Trotter, reporter at Gawker Media. As per the coverage of Gawker.com and its archives, no decisions have yet been finalised.
Gawker Media was purchased by Univision this week for $135 million.
Trump says he'll win 95% of black voters by 2020
Pence chalked the assertion up to Trump's unfailing ability to be "optimistic". "Look, he has a heart for every American".
The whole fiasco between Hulk, real name Terry Bollea, and Gawker, began way back in 2012, when the website published a segment of a sex tape between Bollea and a friend's wife. Founder Nick Denton will leave after the sale. The acquisition will further enrich FMG's content offerings across key verticals including iconic platforms focused on technology (Gizmodo), vehicle culture (Jalopnik), contemporary women's interests (Jezebel) and sports (Deadspin), among others.
Founded 14 years ago, Gawker is known for its no-holds-bar approach to reporting, including breaking gossip stories on high-powered celebrities and business leaders.
Shortly before Gawker filed for bankruptcy, it emerged that many of its legal struggles had been secretly backed by Silicon Valley billionaire and investor Peter Thiel, who acknowledged financing the cases brought by Mr. Bollea and others.
Univision's asset purchase agreement for the deal, filed Wednesday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of NY in Manhattan, gave the acquirer the option to exclude Gawker.com up to three days before closing of the deal.
An 18 August 2025 statement published on Gawker.com says the web site will cease operations in one week.
