Drafted as the number six overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft this year, Russell Okung has finally signed with the Seattle Seahawks ending a six-day holdout. Okung was the last rookie player from the draft’s first round that had yet to sign with a NFL team. The contract is said to be for six years and worth a prospective $58 million with about $29 million of that guaranteed.
Immediately after signing the six-year contract with the Seahawks, Okung joined Seattle for training camp on the field in full pads for his very first practice in the past seven months. He only missed the first 15 minutes of practice this afternoon. He may have been a holdout for nearly an entire week, he’s looking to make up that time he missed. While on the field this afternoon, Okung was in left tackle position with the second unit.
22-year-old Okung, drafted out of Oklahoma State earlier this year in April’s draft, was initially selected to take over for retired left tackle Walter Jones, who is an All-Pro. As soon as Okung was drafted, he was expected to be and was assigned the position of a starter by newly listed Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll.
During his time at Oklahoma State, Okung started early by showing his athleticism and skill on the field and was a First-Team All-American two separate times. In 2009, the 6-foot-5 left tackle acquired the Jim Parker Trophy and was also awarded the title of Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year.
Okung has some big shoes to fill but with his strong and positive attitude as well as aptitude, he’ll be able to take the start position and shine. He may even turn into a feasible franchise player.
