First Republican lawmaker breaks with party, backs Democrat Clinton

03 August 2025

US President Barack Obama and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton have betrayed Americans due to their numerous security and economic policy failures, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said in a statement on Tuesday.

This is how badly some people don't want Donald Trump to become president; they'd vote for a candidate from an opposing party.

"For me, it is not enough to simply denounce his comments: He is unfit to serve our party and can not lead this country", Hanna wrote in the letter posted on syracuse.com, the website of the Post-Standard newspaper in NY.

In an op-ed piece, Representative Richard Hanna of NY cited Trump's attacks on the parents, calling the candidate "deeply flawed in endless ways", "unrepentant" and "self-involved".

Before the convention, Clinton garnered only 78 percent of Sanders supporters last weekend, with 12 percent going to Trump, 6 percent voting for neither and 4 percent voting for a third party candidate.

A range of top figures and organizations from across the political spectrum such as John McCain, Barack Obama and the Veterans of Foreign Wars have criticized him for his comments.

Perhaps, as many Republicans stated they would not support Trump or won't vote at all.

Trump said Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, put the whole country at risk with her illegal email server, deleted evidence of her crime, and lied repeatedly about her conduct which endangered Americans.

The virus causes microcephaly , a birth defect that causes a baby's head to be smaller than other babies of the same sex and age. US officials have said they do not expect broad outbreaks like those in Brazil and in some other Latin American countries.

"While I disagree with her on many issues, I will vote for Mrs. Clinton. I will be hopeful and resolute in my belief that being a good American who loves his country is far more important than parties or winning and losing", he wrote.

The Clinton campaign declined to comment about Trump's remarks.

His presidential campaign has appealed to Capitol Hill for support amid the controversy over the Khans, including circulating talking points for lawmakers to use, but has found little support.

CNN said Clinton has pulled even with Trump on who would be best at handling terrorism and holds a marked edge over him on setting USA foreign policy.

Hanna, who isn't seeking re-election this year, is the first Republican member of Congress to endorse Clinton.

Hanna added, "I think Trump is a national embarrassment".

Onondaga County Republican Chairman Tom Dadey, who co-chairs Trump's NY campaign leadership team, called Hanna's endorse of Clinton "shameful", but not surprising.

He also has trailed Clinton in fundraising.
