Ryan Madson, closer and relief pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, was placed on the DL for 15 days due to a broken right big toe. The placement on the DL will allow for Madson to fully recover from the injury. He was placed on the list immediately Thursday after dealing with the broken toe injury Wednesday after the game against the Giants in which the Phillies won.
Madson has been closing for the Phillies for the past month, the entire first month of the MLB season of 2010. Brad Lidge had been on the disabled list since the start of the season for a recovery from surgery on his right elbow as well as knee surgery. Jair Jurrjens, starter for the Atlanta Braves, left the game against the St. Louis Cardinals today after a left hamstring strain in the first inning of the game. Coach wanting to go ahead and take Jurrjens out of the game to prevent any further injury to his hamstring, especially since he did make a mention of it just a few days ago during conditioning sprints.
Prior to his injury in the first inning, Jurrjens was able to throw successful pitches and retire two batters right off the bat. Matt Holliday was hit with a pitch and then a single was allowed for Colby Rasmus. A three-run homer run was given to Cardinals’ third baseman rookie David Freese. There are a few changes set to take place this MLB season, specifically for the All-Star game beginning with the one being held this year in Anaheim. The four changes for the MLB All-Star Game are listed below.
To begin, there will be more players. The rosters for the All-Star Game will be enhanced to 34 players from 33 players. These 34 players will consist of 13 pitchers and 21 position players. The 15-day disabled list now includes the name of left-hander Brett Anderson of the Oakland Athletics. He was placed on the DL due to elbow inflammation and a strain in the left forearm. The final decision to put Anderson on the DL after he complained of tightness in his left elbow after his last start was when he threw on the side once.
Anderson came to agreement with a contract on April 16, just eleven days ago, that consisted of a four-year $12 million deal and includes team options for both 2014 as well as 2015. The deal could ultimately reach a remarkable $31 million. 22-year-old Anderson is currently 1-1 with an ERA of 2.35 within four starts. Congress is trying to create a ban that will prohibit the use of smokeless tobacco, or better known as chewing tobacco, in Major League Baseball. Steroids have already been banned, what’s going to be next after smokeless tobacco? Over the counter medicines? Why not focus on more important issues such as unemployment and the war that needs to be brought to a conclusion?
Expanding on the topic of smokeless tobacco, though, it is not harmful to be chewing tobacco while out on the field. However, Congress does not want chewing tobacco to be used during any game. Tonight, the Texas Rangers battle the Cleveland Indians on the baseball field, but one starter for the Rangers won’t make an appearance tonight. C.J. Wilson has been removed from the starting grid of tonight’s game against the Indians due to a mild case of food poisoning.
Wilson came down with a case of food poisoning during the team’s off day on Tuesday and although his condition has improved and he is feeling better, the Rangers wanted Wilson to have one more good day of rest. Opening day is a hectic time for the entire league of baseball. Each team wants to win their home opener, but not everyone finds success in trying. However, the Tigers did win their home opener this week. On opening day, the Detroit Tigers successfully triumphed over the Cleveland Indians 5-2. This comes after beating the Kansas City Royals in the opening series of the 2010 MLB season.

Sunday night, Josh Beckett was in Fenway Park to play the first opening game of this year’s 2010 MLB season. However, on Monday, he was in Fenway Park for another reason – to sign a $68 million four-year extension with his current team, the Boston Red Sox. Josh Beckett has agreed to and signed a deal with the Boston Red Sox that will keep him as a pitcher with the Red Sox through 2014.
Beckett, 29 years old and number one start for the Red Sox, will see a $5 million signing bonus as well as more than $15 million as an annual salary for the rest of his contract extension. Continue Reading…
