The Miami Heat is coming off their first NBA championship since forming the Big 3 in South Beach with LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade all playing alongside each other. After ending last season as without a doubt the best all-around team in the league, the Heat have few positions to upgrade, but they did anyway with perhaps one of the most successful off-seasons of any team in the league.
After convincing sharp-shooter Ray Allen to sign with the Heat over the Boston Celtics for less money, Miami had made a huge splash in free agency and became one of the best three-point shooting teams in the league. As if that signing wasn’t impressive enough, the Heat went out and landed another sharp-shooter in the form of small forward Rashard Lewis.
Obviously, Lewis isn’t the same player he was three years ago and may ultimately be a bust for the Heat. Despite that being the case, Miami may be willing to take a chance on the forward becoming a starter. With LeBron being the starter at small forward and Wade at shooting guard, Lewis would have to move down to power forward in order to get into the starting rotation.
If Miami were to attempt to start Lewis at the four spot, Bosh would also have to shift to the center position. Bosh is more than capable of making the move and this transition may ultimately prove to make the Heat that much more dominant with another outside shooter on the floor.
Unfortunately, teams with size in the frontcourt might pose matchup problems for the Heat on defense. Offense will be much improved with Lewis helping stretch the defense with his ability to hit from outside, but the liability on defense may be something that would prevent the move for Miami.
