After losing the first two games of the Western Conference Finals to the San Antonio Spurs, the Oklahoma City Thunder were facing an 0-2 hole heading back to their home floor at the Chesapeake Energy Arena for Game 3.
Once the Thunder was facing an uphill battle down two games to none, the consensus was that the more experienced and veteran savvy Spurs were on the verge of pulling off the sweep. San Antonio had proven they were the better all-around team in the first two games with some brilliant performances from NBA MVP finalist Tony Parker.
Even though Parker was the older of the two point guards and thought to struggle against the speed of Russell Westbrook, the three-time NBA champion was holding his own and was without a doubt the best player on the Spurs during this series. Unfortunately, Parker’s play along wasn’t enough to lead this team over the up-and-coming team from Oklahoma City.
After three straight wins by the Thunder, the Spurs faced elimination for the first time in the 2012 NBA playoffs heading into Game 6 in Oklahoma City. Even though Parker led the way with 29 points and 12 assists and four-time NBA champion Tim Duncan also had a solid game with 25 points and 14 rebounds, the Spurs couldn’t overcome Kevin Durant’s big night as the three-time NBA scoring champion finished with a game-high 34 points and 14 rebounds.
It seems that age finally caught with San Antonio after another amazing season in which they exceeded expectations. Now that Oklahoma City has beaten San Antonio in Game 6, 107-99, the Thunder will advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since moving from Seattle.
Oklahoma City will await the winner of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat. The Celtics currently lead the series 3-2 heading into Game 6 in Beantown.
