Over the past month or so, there’s been a debate around the NBA and throughout the 2012 Olympics about NBA Commissioner David Stern considering an age limit for the Olympics moving forward. Apparently, Stern wants a limit of 23-years-old for NBA players to compete overseas for Team USA.
Needless to say, the potential rule change didn’t go over well with the players or the fans. With Team USA putting together a squad that rivals the Dream Team of 1992, a lot of attention has been given to Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Kevin Durant in their quest for a second consecutive gold medal in the Olympics.
The problem the NBA sees is the constant wear and tear on the bodies of these veteran players while playing for Team USA. With virtually no time to recover from the grueling NBA season, these veterans are at better risk for injury and poor play at the beginning of the next season in the league.
Obviously, most NBA owners are supporting Stern for attempting to make the rule change. With their players overseas playing for Team USA, they risk the franchise’s chances next season and potentially beyond.
Even though the owners and Stern want the new age limit to go into effect, it appears that it is unlikely that the new rule will be given the green light. There’s still a chance that 23 and under might be a rule that is used in the near future, but it won’t affect the 2016 Olympics.
As of right now, Kobe Bryant has said that he won’t return for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janerio, Brazil, but LeBron and Durant will almost still be on Team USA in the next go around. Other candidates will probably be Dwight Howard, Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose, Chris Paul and Deron Williams.
