After being knocked out of the NBA playoffs in convincing fashion by the Miami Heat, the New York Knicks must travel back to the Big Apple and go back to the drawing board. Obviously, the dilemma the Knicks face moving forward is the problems with Amar’e Stoudemire and what to do via free agency this summer.
One of the biggest decisions the Knicks’ front office must make is whether or not to re-sign point guard Jeremy Lin. With Lin single-handedly resurrecting this team after a miserable start to the season, the Asian-American point guard became an instant superstar both in the United States and in China.
As arguably the hottest player in the NBA throughout the majority of the shortened regular season, Lin received all sorts of endorsement deals and was thought to cash-out this summer once he became a free agent on July 1. With the point guard position arguably being the most crucial for NBA teams these days, Lin’s valuable on the free market would be huge not only for the boost in the backcourt but the impact to a team’s popularity in the US and overseas.
The shear marketability of this rising star is uncharted and extremely tempting for every team in the league. With that being said, there’s no question that teams in need of a boost in the backcourt and amongst NBA fans will be throwing all sorts of others at the up-and-comer.
Obviously, the Knicks will have their chance to re-sign Lin and current head coach Mike Woodson believes that New York will definitely retain him moving forward. Whether or not that turns out to be the case remains to be seen, but there’s a good chance that Lin will secure his long-term future in the Big Apple come July 1.
