No star player in recent memory has had a worse meltdown than former Sixth Man of the Year Lamar Odom did with the defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks this season. After being involved in the most lopsided trade of the offseason and perhaps over the last few years, Odom was headed to Dallas from the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for a draft picks and an $8.9 million trade exception.
With the Lakers seemingly forced to trade Odom after the failed Chris Paul trade, Los Angeles had no choice but to make a deal as quickly as possible. Dallas just happened to be the first team that was willing and able to take the versatile forward for next to nothing.
Shortly after the trade, the shortened NBA regular season began and Mavs fans knew why the Lakers were so quick to trade their All-Star-caliber forward. Odom was a shell of his former self and was ultimately deactivated before the NBA playoffs as a result.
After an ugly divorce with the Mavs, Dallas must make a decision on whether or not to trade him or buyout his contract for $2.4 million before June 29. The consensus as of right now is that the Mavs will buyout Odom. This will make the forward a free agent.
Once Odom becomes a free agent, most people believe he’ll simply sign with the Lakers on a short-term deal. Unfortunately for Lakers fans, that might not be what Odom is thinking as it appears the Big Apple still holds a special place in his heart.
Reportedly, Odom will seriously consider signing with the New York Knicks if he becomes a free agent. The Los Angeles will still be a potential destination, but New York has become likely candidate to land the hometown boy this summer.
