After losing Game 2 to the Miami Heat and dropping the 12th consecutive loss in the NBA playoffs (NBA record), the New York Knicks were basically dubbed a team with no chance to compete with the much more talented and motivated Heat in the next two games. With the Knicks playoff exit seemingly inevitable at this point, forward Amare Stoudemire took out his frustration on the glass shield of a fire extinguisher.
Obviously, this was a bonehead move by a player that is already overpaid and quite injury prone. After shattering the glass with his left hand, Stoudemire immediately needed medical treatment as the glass had left a laceration on his non-shooting hand. The injury is severe enough that Stoudemire will miss Game 3 in New York at Madison Square Garden and potentially the rest of the playoffs.
Even though it appears that the Knicks don’t stand a chance against the Heat, Stoudemire making this ill-advised move puts his career into serious question moving forward. The veteran forward has made it known that he is sorry for his actions after Game 2 and regrets punching the glass, but it may have been the last straw for a short stint in the Big Apple.
In Stoudemire place, Carmelo Anthony will shift over to power forward for Game 3. As if this team hadn’t already had their backs against the wall without Jeremy Lin and lackluster play against arguably the best team in the Eastern Conference, things have only gotten worse with Stoudemire potentially done for the rest of the series.
It remains to be seen whether or not Anthony and company can step up their game at Madison Square Garden in order to get back into this series, but even if they can the question remains whether or not the Knicks want to keep Stoudemire long-term.
