After a few weeks of absolute silence, the talks of a blockbuster trade sending Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers have begun to heat up once again. This time around the Orlando Magic is exploring a four-team trade involving the Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets.
Reportedly, the details of the trade have the Magic sending Howard to L.A. and receiving Pau Gasol and Arron Afflalo in return. As for the other teams, the Nuggets will acquire Andre Igoudala and the 76ers will receive Andrew Bynum. The Lakers will also acquire Al Harrington as a part of the deal.
Obviously, this is the first we’ve heard of the new trades talks involving Howard and the proposal will almost certainly change in the coming days. Regardless of changes to the blockbuster deal in the days to come, the current deal makes senses for all teams involved. Every team in the equation will acquire a big-name player that may ultimately improve the squad moving forward.
There’s no question that the Lakers stand to benefit the most with any deal involving Howard to L.A., but it may be the three other teams involved that come out on top in the end. With the Lakers dealing Gasol to Orlando and Bynum to Philadelphia, Los Angeles is sacrificing two of their best players in return for Howard and an aging veteran in Harrington.
The main reason the Lakers would make the deal outside of receiving arguably the league’s best center in return is shedding Gasol’s contract. With two years left at almost $40 million, Gasol’s contract off the books would greatly benefit the team in terms of acquiring other players in the next two years. This may be the intention of the Lakers moving forward with the current trade proposal.
