As arguably one of the elite point guards in the NBA today, Deron Williams of the Brooklyn Nets is without a doubt the biggest name that might become available on the NBA free agent market as of July 1st. With Williams projected to decline his player option of $17.7 million for next season with the Nets, the perennial All-Star will officially become an unrestricted free agent and able to sign with any team in the league.
Once it became apparent that Williams intends to opt-out the final year of his contract with the Nets, the buzz started to circulate about Williams’ pending free agency and what teams might be interested in signing the elite floor general. With the league becoming rich with talented point guards, the position is as highly desired as ever.
The teams supposedly interested in Williams with the best chance of signing him long-term are the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks and the Nets.
Brooklyn has the edge in the money department with the ability to sign the point guard the most lucrative contract worth more than $100 million. The Mavs on the other hand have the hometown edge with Williams growing up in Texas. As for the Lakers, the appeal of playing in Los Angeles and alongside Kobe Bryant is always a draw along with the 16 championship banners hanging in the rafters.
Even though the appeal of playing in Los Angeles is always tough to resist for big-name players, this time around the decisive edge has gone to Dallas and Brooklyn. Apparently, Williams has dubbed the Mavs and the Nets the frontrunners to sign him once he hits the free agent market.
The real question from here on out is whether or not Williams is playing for the big money in Brooklyn or a chance to win a title alongside Dirk Nowitzki in Dallas.
