The Los Angeles Lakers were able to pull off two blockbuster trades this summer to acquire Steve Nash and Dwight Howard. With the addition of these two superstars, the Lakers may very well be the team to beat in the Western Conference.
Even though the Lakers may have to start the season without Howard in uniform due to a recovery from back surgery, the latest addition to the line of great Lakers centers is making an impression on the fans in Los Angeles by doing everything within his power to improve his game.
Howard may still be a ways away from returning to the floor, but he’s making the best of his opportunity soak up the knowledge from arguably one of the greatest centers of all-time in Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The perennial All-Star let it be known via Twitter that he fully intends to work with Kareem once given his medical release and took it one step further by meeting with the NBA’s all-time league scorer on Monday.
After meeting with the six-time NBA champion, Howard took to twitter again to talk about his new mentor. Howard praised Kareem with many flattering comments and finished off by saying that he’ll be working with Kareem for many years to come.
The last line of Howard’s latest tweet had many Lakers fans buzzing as it basically indicated that three-time Defensive Player of the Year wants to stay in Los Angeles long-term. The biggest question mark heading into next season is whether or not Howard will re-sign with the team once he officially becomes an unrestricted free agent.
At this point in time, it appears that Howard staying with the team is a foregone conclusion and nothing more than a formality. It remains to be seen if that is the case, but it doesn’t seem promising that Howard will be in purple and gold for the long haul.
