After claiming that the current Team USA squad would beat the Dream Team from 1992, Kobe Bryant caused quite a stir with these comments with many members of the Dream Team saying that this current team wouldn’t have a chance against the likes of Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson’s squad.
As of right now, the consensus appears to be that Kobe’s squad wouldn’t be able to beat Jordan’s team. There’s no question that the international talent is much better these days in comparison to 1992, but the overall talent and size of the Dream Team would be too much to handle for Coach K’s undersized squad.
Obviously, there’s no way to end this debate, but it continues to gain steam with current players claiming they’d come out on top.
The most recent player on the current Team USA squad to come out and say they’d beat the Dream Team is reigning NBA champion LeBron James. Apparently, LeBron feels that his team would top Magic’s squad in a head-to-head battle of unbelievably talented basketball players.
There’s no question that this showdown between some of the players to ever play the game would be intriguing to say the least. Both squads are stacked with talent from top to bottom and would give an inch to the opponent. Despite that being the case, it’s hard to take the current squad over a team filled with Hall of Famers.
The Jordan factor alone is something that may put the Dream Team over the top. The 2012 Team USA squad does have Kobe Bryant and LeBron, but Jordan’s dominance at that point in his career was arguably better than either one of these superstars has been able to achieve throughout their careers.
An interesting debate to say the least, but in the end it would be the Dream Team that’d come out on top in my opinion.
