Once Hall of Famer Jerry Sloan decided to call it quits after 23 seasons with the Utah Jazz, the consensus was that the successful head coach was officially done as a leader on the sidelines in the NBA.
After a public dispute with superstar point guard Deron Williams in Utah, the longtime Jazz head coach didn’t want to do it anymore as he had enough of the grind in Salt Lake City. With that being said, the 70-year-old wasn’t expected to make a return to the league anytime soon, but it appears he may have had a change of heart as he has expressed interest in the head coaching vacancy with the Orlando Magic and the Charlotte Bobcats.
It was recently reported that former NBA superstar Patrick Ewing had expressed interest in interviewing for the job in Charlotte. With the friendship between owner Michael Jordan and Ewing, the New York Knicks legend was said to be the favorite for the open position. That may very well change now with Sloan showing interest in the job and Stan Van Gundy reportedly also being a candidate.
It would be ironic that Sloan be hired by Jordan in Charlotte as the six-time NBA champion is the main reason for the former head coach failing to win an NBA title in two consecutive appearances in the NBA Finals back in the late ‘90s.
As for the vacant coaching position in Orlando, the Magic haven’t labeled anyone the clear favorite to take over for the recently fired Stan Van Gundy. Sloan would be a welcomed addition to a team in desperate need of some leadership on the sidelines regardless of whether or not Dwight Howard will still be in Orlando next season or beyond.
