Over the past few weeks or so, the Los Angeles Lakers were aiming at veteran free agents with Grant Hill at the top of the list. With only the veteran’s minimum of $1.4 million at their disposal, the Lakers are extremely limited in terms of signing free agents. Despite that being the case, the consensus was that the Lakers would still be able to bring in Hill, Antawn Jamison and or Jermaine O’Neal.
Unfortunately, the Lakers took too long to come to an agreement with Hill as he elected to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers instead. Reportedly, Hill has agreed to sign a two-year deal to play with the Clippers.
This move by Hill was surprising to say the least. A one-year deal at the veteran’s minimum with the Lakers was thought to be a done deal. It seemed as if it was a matter of time before Hill ended up alongside former teammate Steve Nash and rival Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles.
With the addition of Hill, the Clippers have had arguably one of their best off-seasons in franchise history. Even though landing Chris Paul via trade last year was the biggest move the team had ever made, the Clippers has been extremely active over the last month or so with all sorts of moves via trade and through free agency.
Now that the Clippers have Lamar Odom, Jamal Crawford, Hill and Chauncey Billups in the fold in Los Angeles, the Pacific division may be up grabs regardless of the Lakers acquiring Nash. The addition of Odom alone was enough to upgrade the bench, but now that Crawford, Hill and Billups are also on the roster, the Clippers will be extremely tough to beat next season with a talented starting lineup and a solid second unit.
