After the most successful season in recent memory for the Los Angeles Clippers, the struggling NBA franchise will attempt to keep superstars Chris Paul and Blake Griffin in Los Angeles while trying to build around these players to secure the long-term future for the Clippers.
Along with addressing the free agency and player options, the Clippers’ front office also had to make a major decision in terms of the future of head coach Vinny Del Negro in Los Angeles. There’s no question that Del Negro did well in his first season with the Clippers by leading the team to a 40-26 record in the regular season, clinching the 5th seed in the Western Conference and first-round victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA playoffs.
Needless to say, Del Negro earned the right to stay with the Clippers long-term. Despite that being the consensus, Del Negro’s future with the team was still up in the air with the franchise not sold on whether or not to exercise the option on the head coach this summer.
Fortunately for Del Negro, the Clippers has picked up the team option on him which will keep the head coach around for at least one more season.
During his three seasons with Los Angeles, Del Negro led the Clippers to a record of 72-76. Along with leading the Clippers to the playoffs this past season for the first time in six years, Del Negro also made franchise history with the best winning percentage for the Clippers at .606.
Whether or not Del Negro can continue his success with the franchise next season and convince the team to sign him long-term remains to be seen, but there will be a lot of pressure to succeed from here on out with Paul and Griffin leading the way on the floor.
