One of the hardest things to watch in the first round of the NBA playoffs was seeing last season’s NBA MVP Derrick Rose going down with a torn ACL in Game 1 against the Philadelphia 76ers. As a result, the Chicago Bulls failed to bounce back and compete with a 76ers squad that was motivated to advance to the next round against the Boston Celtics.
The injury suffered by Rose was immediately considered to be serious with the superstar point guard in agony rolling around on the floor. Most people already knew that Rose would be out the rest of the playoffs and possibly the rest of the season with the apparent knee injury, but no one anticipated it would be as serious as it turned out to be.
With a torn ACL, Rose’s left knee required surgery to get back on the floor as soon as possible. Fortunately, the surgery undergone by Rose was successful, but the perennial All-Star may be out anywhere from eight to 12 months for the Bulls. With that being said, there’s a chance that Rose won’t be able to get back on the floor until the NBA playoffs in 2013.
This is a major blow for the Chicago Bulls to say the least. With the Bulls becoming arguably one of the top three teams in the league over the past two seasons with Rose leading the way, Chicago was on the verge of contending for an NBA title, but now those chances of winning an NBA championship for the first time since 1998 is unlikely next season without Rose.
So with the news of Rose’s recovery taking much longer than anticipated, Bulls fans may have to wait a little while longer before Chicago will be a legitimate NBA title contender with their floor general in the backcourt.
