After many successful years in the NBA as one of its premier stars, four-time scoring champion Allen Iverson was traded to the Detroit Pistons from the Denver Nuggets. This trade ultimately ended Iverson’s career in the league as he was never the same player and struggled to find a role he was content with.
Once the Pistons had enough of Iverson the perennial All-Star headed to the Memphis Grizzlies to resurrect his career. That move turned out to be costly as the Grizzlies’ coaching staff had the intention of bringing Iverson off the bench opposed to starting him as he was led to believe.
After a mutual parting of the ways with Memphis, Iverson ultimately landed back with the Philadelphia 76ers to try and rekindle an old flame. Even though it appeared to be the perfect combination, that reunion didn’t last long either with Iverson leaving the team early to tend to his daughter that was struggling with health issues.
Iverson leaving the 76ers appears to have been the last straw for his NBA career as he hasn’t been able to sign with another team since. There’s been many attempts for Iverson’s return to the league and even stints overseas to prove he still has what it takes, but no team has shown significant interest and as a result the future Hall of Famer is unemployed.
At 37-years-old, many doubt that Iverson has anything left in the tank and teams refuse to take a chance on the former superstar. As a result, Iverson is contemplating playing in China if he can find his way onto an NBA squad before next season.
This move isn’t uncommon these days and can be lucrative for former NBA stars. Stephon Marbury is the perfect example of success in China. It remains to be seen if Iverson will ultimately follow in his footsteps remains to be seen.
