The 2011 MLB All-Star Game is just around the corner and with the All-Star Game comes the always popular Home Run Derby. This year will be intriguing to say the least as there will be some veteran sluggers and first-time competitors on the rosters of both the AL and NL Home Run Derby squads.
Here is how the list pans out:
AL Home Run Derby team
Captain: David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox (17 homeruns)
Adrian Gonzalez, Boston Red Sox (16 homeruns)
Jose Bautista, Toronto Blue Jays (27 homeruns, leads majors)
Robinson Cano, New York Yankees (14 homeruns)
NL Home Run Derby team
Captain: Prince Fielder, Milwaukee Brewers (21 homeruns)
Matt Kemp, Los Angeles Dodgers (22 homeruns, NL leader)
Matt Holiday, St. Louis Cardinals (10 homeruns)
Rickie Weeks, Milwaukee Brewers (15 homeruns)
Both David Ortiz and Prince Fielder picked who they would be competing with this time around and I have to say they did a pretty good job of getting some of the best sluggers in the MLB together for this Home Run Derby. Along with selecting two of the best sluggers in the AL and NL in Robinson Cano and Matt Kemp, Ortiz and Fielder showed some love for their teammates by selecting Adrian Gonzalez (Boston Red Sox) and Rickie Weeks (Milwaukee Brewers).
In my opinion, Prince Fielder has the edge on the NL squad and Adrian Gonzalez is the favorite in the AL. David Ortiz will be trouble for the AL competitors and Matt Kemp might be able to give the boys in the NL a run for their money as he has a league-leading 22 homeruns coming in, but Fielder and Gonzalez will steal the show.
Regardless of the outcome, the right players were selected for both sides and there should be another great show on the horizon in the Home Run Derby.
