Various media sources have reported that veteran catcher Rod Barajas for the New York Mets has been acquired off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The official announcement came just prior to Sunday’s baseball game where the Dodgers will go up against the Cincinnati Reds. Reports have surfaced that during this trade, the New York Mets will receive cash considerations for sending, or “letting go of,” Brajas to the Dodgers.
34-year-old Barajas was hitting an average of .225 with 12 home runs and 32 runs batted in during his 74 appearances with the New York Mets this MLB season. He had been sidelined and on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained left oblique and came off the disabled list this past Thursday.
This is a huge help for the Dodgers as they have been trying to make use of rookie A.J. Ellis and 41-year-old veteran Brad Ausmus due to their starting catcher Russell Martin doomed for the season since August 3 due to injuries sustained to his right hip. Ellis and Ausmus just simply haven’t been getting the job done as Los Angeles had hoped and had to make a change somewhere – and in come Barajas, a catcher who can hit with a great slugging percentage and on-base percentage.
To fill Barajas’ roster sport for the Mets, New York called up Jesus Feliciano from AAA Buffalo. Feliciano will be available to play in Sunday’s game where the Mets will play at Pittsburgh against the Pirates. The outfielder is currently hitting a .324 average with a single home run and 26 runs batted in during his 78 appearances for AAA Buffalo this season. Feliciano has been with the Mets in two stints this season and in 27 contests, he has hit a .292 average with two runs batted in as well as eight scored runs.
