The wait is officially over as Derek Jeter has become the first New York Yankee to have 3,000 hits. This was a day to remember to say the least for the storied New York Yankees franchise and the MLB as one of the best players to ever play the game went into the record books in dramatic fashion.
Not only does superstar shortstop Derek Jeter have five World Series rings with the Yankees and have the distinction as one of the greatest of all-time, but now he will go down as one of the best players on the best franchise in baseball. With other baseball greats like Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle ahead of him, the consensus was that there would be plenty of other Yankees that would be in the 3,000 hit club, but Derek Jeter will go into that club alone.
Coming into Saturday’s game against the division rival Tampa Bay Rays in the Big Apple, Derek Jeter was just two hits shy of getting to the 3,000 milestone and despite facing a great young pitcher in David Price, the captain was up to the task.
With just three innings into Saturday’s matchup against the Rays, Jeter was just one hit shy of the milestone and in dramatic fashion hit a homerun to reach 3,000. This was just the third homerun of the season for the five-time World Series champion, but it will without a doubt be the most memorable of his Hall of Fame caliber career.
As of a result of his second hit on Saturday in the Big Apple, Jeter has become the 28th player in MLB history to hit 3,000 and the first in New York Yankees’ franchise history.
