U.S. Open Qualifier Included Cowboy’s QB Tony Romo

On the outskirts of Houston in The Woodlands at The Club at Carlton Woods, Tony Romo, quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys was qualifying to compete in the U.S. Open.  Romo was playing in the accompany of both Dustin Wigington and Thomas Hagler and will be playing a total of 36 holes.

Romo was attempting to get a one of two sports that 35 other individuals are trying to acquire.  This morning at 10:30 a.m., the air horns sounded which halted play after five holds with Romo two over par.  The sky cleared up by noon and within 30 minutes, the players were recommencing their play.

A couple famous golf players are qualifying – Bob Estes, a PGA Tour professional as well as Steve Elkington, a former PGA champion.

After the first 18 holes, Romo was four strokes from the lead.  He started with a quadruple bogey for the second round of today’s U.S. Open qualifier.  He was able to knock out a total of three holes prior to the weather coming back into form and halting play for yet a second time today.  Due to the weather, the second round was set to commence and finish on Tuesday.  Romo had to withdraw yet once again from a qualifier due to prior NFL commitments with the Cowboys.

This is not the first time that prior NFL commitments have caused Romo to have to pass up an opportunity to qualify and compete in a PGA event.  Romo had tried to qualify in an event for the Byron Nelson Championship that was held on May 17 but had to withdraw due to a confliction of completion and an OTA workout with the Dallas Cowboys.

The U.S. Open will take place June 14 through June 20 in Pebble Beach, California, at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
