One of the major concerns for the Pittsburgh Steelers heading into the 2012 NFL season was the absence of up-and-coming wide receiver Mike Wallace due to a contract dispute. With future Hall of Famer Hines Ward calling it quits and the receiving corps already thin for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers needed to convince the young wideout to come to training camp.
Unfortunately, Wallace has been reluctant to do so without signing a long-term contract extension. As a restricted free agent, Wallace is set to make $2.7 million next season if he signs his tender. Wallace has yet to put pen to paper in order to stay with the Steelers for his final season.
The Steelers are without a doubt one of the strictest organizations in the NFL in terms of negotiating contracts and extensions. Pittsburgh has strict guidelines of not negotiating contracts during the regular season and therefore will only have a short time in which to get a deal done with Wallace before having to wait until after the season to strike up talks once again.
It remains uncertain whether or not the team has agreed to talk about a long-term deal with Wallace and if that is the reason he’s decided to return to camp in preparation for the final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.
As for Wallace, the fact he didn’t receive any offers from other teams didn’t bode well for him in his negotiations with the Steelers. That may have led to him reporting to the team and ending the holdout that began to be a distraction for the team moving forward.
The 2012 NFL regular season will get underway for the Steelers when they take on Peyton Manning’s Denver Broncos on September 9. It’ll be interesting to see whether or not the team will have a deal done before kickoff.
