Veteran Wideout Plaxico Burress Tries Out for New England Patriots

After a successful return to the NFL after a prison term that threatened to end his football career, veteran wide receiver Plaxico Burress is a free agent for the second time in two years.

The short stint with the New York Jets went surprisingly well for Burress as he became a force to be reckoned with downfield once again. Even though Burress didn’t put up Pro Bowl-caliber numbers like he had with the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers, the veteran wideout was impressive nonetheless.

Unfortunately, Burress’ success with the Jets has yet to pay off as he remains a free agent with the NFL preseason underway. Few teams that have shown interest in Burress over the course of the NFL off-season, but none are willing to pay what his asking price.

Over the past few weeks, Burress has been linked to quite a few teams in his attempt to sign with a fourth NFL team. The Oakland Raiders, Steelers and Giants have all seemingly passed on signing the NFL veteran, but there may be some light at the end of the tunnel with the New England Patriots willing to take a look.

After Chad Johnson failed to make an impression with the Patriots last season, veteran wideouts might be hesitant to sign with New England with the prospect of slipping into mediocrity much like the man formerly known as Ochocinco.

Apparently, Burress isn’t bothered by Johnson’s failure to make an impact in New England and is willing to take a chance with the Patriots.

As of right now, the Patriots have a fairly stacked receiving corps with Wes Welker, Deion Branch, Brandon Lloyd, Jabar Gaffney and Donte Stallworth leading the way at wide receiver. AS if that weren’t enough targets for Tom Brady, the Patriots also have arguably the best tight end in the league with Rob Gronkowski.

Needless to say, it’s a stretch that New England brings in Burress. Possible, but unlikely.
