In Week 11, the Houston Texans suffered arguably their biggest blow of the season with franchise quarterback Matt Schaub going down for the season with an injury to his right foot. With Schaub out for the season and the team atop the AFC South division standings, the Texans knew they had to replace their franchise quarterback and hopefully continue to win football games in order to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.
Now that Matt Schaub was officially out for the season, the Houston Texans had to turn to backup quarterback Matt Leinart. Even though Leinart struggled in his time with the Arizona Cardinals, the consensus was that he would be good enough to lead this team into the playoffs and give them a shot to make a deep run.
Unfortunately, the Matt Leinart era in Houston ended just as fast as it began with the former Heisman trophy winner and BCS champion going down with a collarbone injury in the win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Leinart played well in limited time for the Texans, but this injury looks like it will keep him out the rest of the season and will force Houston to go with T.J. Yates.
After taking over for Leinart, Yates threw for just 70 yards and was pretty unimpressive in the second half as the Texans only gained 47 yards with two first downs. Obviously, those kinds of numbers in the second half against an awful team like the Jaguars isn’t going to get the job done, but the Texans are pretty limited right now and will stick with Yates.
If T.J. Yates continues to struggle, the Texans could turn to recently signed veteran Kellen Clemens. Even though Clemens isn’t much of an upgrade, he might be able to help get this offense going better than the rookie Yates.
