The AFC West division has become quite interesting over the past two years as it is no longer a one-team division dominated by the San Diego Chargers. Even though the Chargers are still considered to be the top dogs in the AFC West, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders have emerged as legitimate playoff teams that will contend for the division title for the foreseeable future.
Coming into Week 9, the Oakland Raiders will have an opportunity to see whether or not their newly acquired veteran quarterback Carson Palmer is the right answer under center moving forward. Obviously, the Raiders will not be putting Kyle Boller or rookie Terrelle Pryor under center any time soon if they can help it, but they do need a solid performance out of their new starting quarterback in order to get this potential playoff team back on track.
Fortunately, the competition will get a little easier for Carson Palmer and company this week as they are set to defend their home field against the lowly division rival Denver Broncos. The Broncos have a quarterback problem of their own right now with second-year gunslinger Tim Tebow struggling, but they should still put up a fight in Week 9 in Oakland.
The Oakland Raiders are definitely the better all-around team coming into this matchup, but should not take the Denver Broncos lightly like they did against the Kansas City Chiefs last week.
As of right now, the Oakland Raiders are heavily favored to get the win over their division rivals with a -9 point spread. That spread is higher than many have anticipated as the Broncos should put some pressure on Carson Palmer.
