After much debate and deliberating back and forth, the NFL will officially begin the 2012 season with replacement referees. With the preseason being an indication of things to come, this has obviously not gone down well with the fans, players or coaches.
With no new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) in place, there’s no telling how long the lockout will continue. If the latest lockout in the NBA between the players and owners is any indication of how bad things can get, the league’s refs may be out a considerable amount of time and could have a serious impact on the way games are played throughout the 2012 NFL season.
As if things weren’t bad enough in the NFL after the bounty situation with the New Orleans Saints, the league continues to rub fans the wrong way with the way they conduct business. It remains uncertain the type of impact the replacement refs will have on the game in the early parts of the upcoming season, but it could potentially become very frustrating without everyone involved.
Any fan of the NFL knows how difficult a job it is to ref a live football game and that will never be more apparent during the upcoming season. The fans may quickly begin to turn on the replacement refs as well as the league itself if things begin to get out of hand throughout the course of a 16-game season and the playoffs that follow.
It’ll be interesting to see the impact of the replacements and whether or not it’s a drastic difference from what NFL fans are used to. If the lockout continues, the topic of replacement refs will almost certainly dominating the headlines on a weekly basis if outcomes are dictated by mistakes from the refs.
