Last season was a breath of fresh air for the Carolina Panthers as they witnessed the emergence of the NFL’s newest superstar in Heisman trophy winner Cam Newton. Even though there was a lot of doubt surrounding Newton’s transition to the next level, the former Auburn gunslinger was even better on the NFL stage as quickly became one of the most versatile and dangerous quarterbacks in the league.
As arguably the one player on the Panthers’ roster to benefit the most from Newton’s rise to superstardom in the NFL, veteran wide receiver Steve Smith became the up-and-comer’s favorite target in the offense. With many years of mediocrity before the arrival of Newton, Smith seemed to be on the decline and potentially nearing the end of his career in the NFL.
Fortunately, the Panthers drafting Newton with the number overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft was just what the doctor ordered for Smith as he was able to get back to form with a quarterback that could get him the football on a consistent basis.
During training camp earlier this week, Smith was suffering from a foot infection that was threatening to keep him out the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 9. It a turn of events, Panthers Coach Ron Rivera believes that the five-time Pro Bowl wideout will be good to go in order to take on the Bucs.
As without a doubt the best offensive weapon in the air attack, Smith’s presence downfield will be vital for Newton and company during the upcoming NFL season. The two stars may combine for another Pro Bowl year that may ultimately propel the Panthers into the NFL playoffs at season’s end.
It’ll be interesting to see whether or not Newton and Smith can stay on track after the breakout season last year.
