The New York Jets have made their first big move in free agency as they were able to lock up one of the most sought after free agent wide receivers on the market in former Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes. As the number one priority of the offseason, the Jets did not hesitate to give Holmes exactly what he needed to stay in New York.
Reportedly, the New York Jets have re-signed Santonio Holmes with a deal worth $50 million dollars over the next five years. $10 million dollars a year to play for a perennial Super Bowl title contender is not too shabby to say the least, but he will also have $24 million dollars of the new contract guaranteed which will make Holmes a very rich man regardless of whether or not things work out with the Jets over the next five years.
This doesn’t really come as much of a surprise to most people around the league as Santonio Holmes really didn’t intend on signing anywhere else this offseason, but now things get really interesting for the New York Jets as they have to decide what to do with Antonio Cromartie and Braylon Edwards.
The consensus as of right now is that Braylon Edwards is pretty much done in New York as the Jets will put all their efforts into landing arguably the best free agent on the market right now in lockdown corner Nnamdi Asomugha. With Asomugha playing across from Darrelle Revis, the Jets will have the scariest and most talented secondary in the league.
With the New York Jets in pursuit of Nnamdi Asomugha, there is little chance that Antonio Cromartie will be in a Jets’ uniform next season as he will almost certainly be looking elsewhere.
