It appears that big things are on the horizon for the Indianapolis Colts after the devastating 2-14 season as owner Jim Irsay continues to make changes in order to begin an extensive rebuilding process. The first two employees to get the boot were Bill Polian (Colts vice chairman) and his son Chris Polian (Colts GM). These two firing surprised a lot of people, especially superstar quarterback Peyton Manning.
Even though these moves were considered drastic and somewhat unnecessary after just one bad season, Colts owner Jim Irsay didn’t stop there as he has now also fired head coach Jim Caldwell. Despite having a very impressive rookie season in which he led the Indianapolis Colts to 14 straight wins and a Super Bowl appearance against the New Orleans Saints, Caldwell couldn’t get it done this season without his star quarterback and finished with a miserable 2-14 record.
That must of have left a nasty taste in Irsay’s mouth as he didn’t hesitate to fire Caldwell this week in order to pave the way for what could be a completely different looking football team next season. With the Indianapolis Colts in line for the number one overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft and rookie quarterback Andrew Luck (Stanford) for the taking, the Colts might make some even more bold moves by trading Peyton Manning and blowing up the team.
It remains to be seen whether or not the Indianapolis Colts will take Andrew Luck at number one in the upcoming NFL draft, but the consensus around the league is that is exactly what they will do and as a result that could force the team to trade Peyton Manning elsewhere if he is healthy.
It will be interesting to see what moves the Indianapolis Colts will make from here on out with Peyton Manning’s fate hanging in the balance.
