The 2010 World Cup has been extremely unpredictable so far as only a handful of teams have actually lived up to the hype heading into the tournament. The one team that hasn’t seemed to have missed a step is the tournament favorite in Brazil, who just recently dominated Didier Drogba and the Ivory Coast with a 3-1 victory, but other teams like Spain and England have really struggled in the early going.
Another team thought to go far in the tournament, but has found it hard to live up to expectations so far is Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. Heading into the tournament, Ronaldo and company were thought to give teams like Brazil and Spain a run for their money, but after a 0-0 draw against Ivory Coast, many people started to question whether or not Portugal had what it took to advance to the next round. Fortunately, Portugal had a chance to redeem themselves in somewhat of a tune up game against North Korea and they took full advantage as they lit up the North Koreans for a tournament-high seven goals.
Before Monday’s game against the North Koreans, the tournament-high for goals scored was four by Germany and Argentina, but Cristiano Ronaldo and company blew that out of the water with seven goals which were scored by six different players.
Obviously, destroying North Korea isn’t saying much as they aren’t exactly amongst the best of the best in the tournament, but this will give Portugal some much needed momentum as they have finally found their scoring touch once again.
Here are the Portuguese players that scored against North Korea:
Raul Meireles (29’), Simao (53’), Hugo Almeida (56’), Tiago (60’), Liedson (81’), Cristiano Ronaldo (87’) and Tiago (89’)
As you can see, the match was fairly competitive in the first half with only one goal scored by the Portuguese, but once the second half got going North Korea just fell apart as flood gates were opened and Portugal cruised to a 7-0 victory.
