After being swept by the eventual NBA champion Dallas Mavericks in four games in the playoffs last season, 11-time NBA champion head coach Phil Jackson of the Los Angeles Lakers finally called it quits by retiring as arguably the greatest NBA head coach of all-time. Even though the Zen Master was set on retiring for the past few years, the consensus around the league is that he might not be done with basketball and could give it another shot as a head coach at some point in time. Last season the New York Knicks made one of the biggest trades in the history of the storied NBA franchise as they pulled the trigger on a deal that brought superstar Carmelo Anthony to the Big Apple from the Mile High City. This was a deal that had been brewing throughout the entire season, but the numbers and players changing hands were difficult to match up in order to make it work. Continue Reading…
In the playoffs last season, the eventual NBA champion Dallas Mavericks were near unstoppable. With an offense that could score inside and out without much trouble and a formidable defense despite their aging stars like Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd and Jason Terry, the Mavs were able to get to the NBA Finals and pull off the upset over the revamped Miami Heat led by LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. The future of the Indianapolis Colts continues to be shrouded in mystery with owner Jim Irsay making moves on seemingly a weekly basis and now franchise quarterback Peyton Manning saying that he has no idea whether or not he is in the team’s long-term plans moving forward. Needless to say, the Colts look like they are at the beginning of an extensive rebuilding process around rookie quarterback Andrew Luck (Stanford) who Indianapolis intends to acquire with the number one overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. The 2012 Super Bowl has been set with the New England Patriots representing the AFC and the New York Giants coming out of the NFC. Not only should this be one of the better Super Bowl matchups over the last decade or so, but this one is special with the Patriots looking to avenge their lost to the Giants from when these two teams met back in 2007. Now that the NFL playoffs has come down to just four teams (Patriots, Giants, 49ers and Ravens), the league and NFL fans around the country have been talking about which two teams are destined to face off on Super Bowl Sunday in Indianapolis on Feb. 5. There is no question that any possible matchup is likely with all four teams worthy of advancing and becoming Super Bowl champions, but I believe the two teams to beat and will be the teams to represent their conference in the big game will be the San Francisco 49ers and the New England Patriots. In the AFC Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs, the Baltimore Ravens were the heavy favorites to come out on top against the Houston Texans. With the Texans playing with a rookie quarterback in T.J. Yates and being pretty banged up all season long, the consensus was that the Ravens would run a clinch on the up-and-coming Houston squad and easily advance to the AFC Championship game. It appears that big things are on the horizon for the Indianapolis Colts after the devastating 2-14 season as owner Jim Irsay continues to make changes in order to begin an extensive rebuilding process. The first two employees to get the boot were Bill Polian (Colts vice chairman) and his son Chris Polian (Colts GM). These two firing surprised a lot of people, especially superstar quarterback Peyton Manning. Continue Reading…
New York Giants @ Green Bay Packers Sun. Jan. 15, 2012 4:30 p.m. EST
Back in Week 13, the New York Giants squared off against the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers in a matchup that was predicted to be one of the toughest of the season for Aaron Rodgers and company. Even though the Packers eventually came out on top (38-35), no other team in the league had tested the Packers on both sides of the football the way the Giants were able to.
After that loss to the Packers in Week 13, the Giants kicked their late-season push into high gear as they won three of their final four games of the regular season and won the NFC East division title. Despite losing to the division rival Washington Redskins in Week 15 (23-10), the New York Giants were rolling and seemed to have finally hit their stride which continued into the playoffs. Denver Broncos @ New England Patriots Sat. Jan. 14, 2012 8 p.m. EST
The stage is set for an epic showdown between two of the most popular starting quarterbacks in the NFL today with up-and-comer Tim Tebow facing off against the three-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady. Not only will the media be going crazy promoting this NFL playoff game with two of the league’s golden boys leading the way, but this could be an intriguing matchup.
The biggest headline in this game will no doubt be Tebow going head-to-head against Brady for the second time this season, but the real question will be whether or not the Broncos’ defense can stop the potent offense of the Patriots. New England has that uncanny knack for absolutely dominating the competition with one of the best offenses in the NFL. Continue Reading…
